Day 9 - my skipping rope and I aren't friends....yet?!

I nearly threw my skipping rope out of the window today.  Then I nearly threw myself out the window.  Then I decided that 600 jumps can't be THAT hard and kept going... but I did cry a bit.  I've been absolutely abysmal at skipping the past two days.  I don't mind doing the physical work but it is beyond frustrating having to keep starting over again and again.  But I'm telling myself that I felt like last week was pretty good for me so maybe I'm due a couple of bad days. Please God, though, give me skipping skills soon!

Not minding the food at all.  There's loads of it! Glad James and I are doing this together - it makes meal planning a lot easier.

Here's my day 9 photo.

  1. The jumprope gets better. Most of it is just getting used to it and having the hands and feet start working together and that takes a few weeks. In the meantime make sure you have a good rope. Something with some weight to the actual rope helps. Ball bearings in the handles help. Making sure it is the right length makes a huge difference - if you stand on the rope with both feet it should come about to your armpits.

I went though 3 ropes in Foundation before I found one that worked for me. It will get better, just give it some time.

  2. Believe me, Sasha, I know just how you feel. I was horrible at jump roping at the begining of the program--absolutely horrible. Check out my Day 5 post: http://thepeakconditionproject-seananderson.blogspot.com/2009/06/son-of-man-look-to-sky.html

I didn't do my first set of proper J-ropes without tripping up until day 17--and the other sets were far from perfect that day. The point is, I stuck with it. All that matters right now is the fact you complete the jumps. That is more important right now thatn how smoothly you get through them. You have to give your body and mind time and practice to line up and get coordinated. It is not going to happen over night. Trust me on this. I shed a tear or two too during my J-roping too. And I almost snapped it in half out of anger on some days.

Just make sure your rope is clearing your head by a few inches, otherwise it's too short.

Relax your arms and shoulders, let your wrists do all the work of whipping that rope around. This was hard for me, but I eventually got it.

Try not to get too upset, but if you do, on the plus side, anger and tears burn fat too. ;-)

As a final bit of help, here's a video that may help: http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Jump-Rope-142097843

I'm sure you can find more videos like this if you search the net. Don't let the skill of the people in these videos get you down, just listen to what they have to say. I love J-roping now. In time, you will too.

  4. I read on one of the complete blogs to get the Nike Speed Rope from Sports Authority. I ordered it online and it's great and only 99 cents to ship.

  5. I feel exactly the same way! I hate it with all my heart..Maybe one day i will like it but i don't think it will be anytime soon. Numbers of jumps are going up and the numbers of me tripping is increasing as well ugggggg

  6. Sasha keep going, I had as well yesterday a very bad day and today it is already better. I discovered if I focus too much on the rope and the right jumping I get tangled but if I just look out of the window just counting and not thinking how many I still have to do it goes much smoother.

  7. I had miserable days with the rope from time to time... you'll find eventually that if you're thinking too much, you'll trip more. It's kind of a form of meditation at some point where you just... jump.
